"As you bring a guy into the rotation, [Mitchell] was a guy that could give you a lot of distance in the bullpen," manager Joe Girardi said. "We thought we'd bring up Mitchell. He was throwing the ball pretty well in Triple-A."
Mitchell, a starter at Triple-A, was 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in five starts, and has pitched out of the bullpen just once this season.
When Girardi was asked how comfortable Mitchell would be pitching in relief, he said, "Well, we're going to find out."
