Ponson signs with independent league

Major League veteran Sidney Ponson is not done with professional baseball yet.

Ponson, 33, has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Independent Atlantic League, the club announced on Tuesday.

The right-hander spent 2009 with the Royals, playing first at Triple-A Omaha, before being called up to Kansas City midseason. He appeared in 14 games and compiled a 1-7 record before being designated for assignment, and then released in August.

Ponson's best years came with Baltimore, namely the 2003 season, when the Aruba native started strong before being swapped at the Trade Deadline to San Francisco, where he finished the season with an overall 17-12 mark and a 3.75 ERA.

In addition to the Orioles, Giants and Royals, Ponson has also spent time with the Yankees, Cardinals, Twins and Rangers. He has a career line of 91-113 with a 5.03 ERA.

Ponson, a 12-year veteran, also represented the Netherlands in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, earning the win in the team's first-round victory over the Dominican Republic. The hurler was originally signed by the Orioles in 1993 as an amateur free agent, and later made his Major League debut in April 1998 for the club.
