Rogers claimed off waivers by Yankees

HOUSTON -- Esmil Rogers' tenure in a Toronto uniform is over after the Yankees claimed the right-handed reliever off waivers on Thursday afternoon.

Rogers was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Sunday. He was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo last week but didn't make an appearance during his second go-around in the big leagues this season.

The 28-year-old was acquired from the Indians prior to the 2013 season in exchange for infielder Mike Aviles and catcher Yan Gomes. He was expected to pitch in middle relief but struggled early during his tenure and never really lived up to expectations.

Rogers ended up making 20 starts for the Blue Jays but posted a 4.77 ERA. This season he had a 6.97 ERA, allowing five homers and seven walks over 20 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.

He had also been designated for assignment in May but cleared waivers and was outrighted to Buffalo. Toronto had a similar intention this time, but New York decided to take a chance on him instead.
