Rangers acquire Ramirez from Yankees

PHOENIX -- The Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Edwar Ramirez from the Yankees for cash considerations on Tuesday.

Ramirez, 28, has been added to the team's 40-man roster. He will wear jersey number 23.

"It's a guy we liked a little bit in the past. There are interesting reports on him," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "He's had some success in the big leagues and in the minor leagues in the past. It's a good time of year to take a look at a guy like that."

Ramirez was designated for assignment by New York on Feb. 28. He had a 5.73 ERA and 22 strikeouts without a decision in 20 relief appearances during two stints with the Yankees in 2009. Ramirez spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, going 1-5 with a 3.19 ERA in 29 games.

Ramirez went 5-1 with a 3.55 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings in 55 appearances for the Yankees in 2008 and held the opposition to a .215 batting average, with right-handers hitting just .195. His 10.25 strikeouts per nine innings were seventh-best among American League relievers that year.

Overall, Ramirez is 6-2 with a 5.22 ERA with two saves and 116 strikeouts in 98 1/3 innings in 96 appearances with the Yankees from 2007-09.

He was originally signed by the Angels as an undrafted free agent in February 2001 and joined the Yankees as a Minor League free agent in July 2006.
