• First baseman Joe Mauer progressed to taking batting practice in the cages on Wednesday without any issues, according to assistant general manager Rob Antony. Mauer, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique since July 2, is scheduled to take batting practice again Thursday and is expected to start a rehab assignment soon.
• Twins right-hander Mike Pelfrey began his throwing program at Target Field on Wednesday, Antony said. Pelfrey, who underwent elbow surgery in early June and is on the 60-day disabled list, remains unlikely to return this season.
