• Pirates prospect Josh Bell was promoted to Double-A Altoona earlier in the week. Bell, a 21-year-old outfielder, went 0-for-2 with two walks in his debut. He hit .335 for Class A Advanced Bradenton this season and was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 74 prospect entering 2014.
• The Pirates started the second half of their 2013 season with a 5-3 defeat to the Reds. Francisco Liriano, who started Friday night's game against the Rockies, also got the nod last season and was tagged for five runs in the loss.
