Matheny has chosen his ace, Adam Wainwright, as the National League's starting pitcher. The ninth-year right-hander is a three-time N.L. All-Star (previous: 2010 and 2013). The 6'7" Georgia native is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA and three complete games on the year. In 138.0 innings, he has surrendered just 99 hits and 27 walks while striking out 115. Wainwright has finished in the top three of N.L. Cy Young Award voting three times in his career (2 nd in 2010 and 2013; 3rd in 2009). He was the closer during the Cardinals' Postseason run in 2006, which resulted in the Club's first World Series Championship since 1982. This is the 11th time that a Cardinals pitcher will start the All-Star Game, and Wainwright is the ninth different Cards' pitcher to have the honors. He and his longtime teammate Chris Carpenter are the only Cardinals pitchers in the last 40 years to be named the N.L.'s starter.

Farrell has named Felix Hernandez as the American League's starting pitcher. Hernandez, a five-time A.L. All-Star in his 10th Major League season, becomes only the second Mariner ever to start the All-Star Game, joining two-time A.L. starter Randy Johnson (1995 and 1997). "King Felix" is now the first Venezuelan pitcher to start the Midsummer Classic. The 28-year-old ace won the 2010 A.L. Cy Young Award and he threw the 23rd perfect game in Major League history on August 15, 2012. In his 20 starts in 2014, Hernandez is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA (144.1 IP, 105 H, 25 BB, 154 SO, 0.90 WHIP). Hernandez's 11 wins are a career best at the All-Star break, surpassing his 10 in both 2009 and 2013. On Friday against the Major League-leading Oakland Athletics, Hernandez made his 11th consecutive start of at least seven innings and two earned runs or less, equaling the longest such streak by an A.L. hurler since that of Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry with the 1974 Cleveland Indians.

The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15th. The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
