MIAMI - David Voytek has been selected by fans to represent the Miami Marlins at the 2014 All-Star Game as part of Major League Baseball's "Target Presents PEOPLE All-Star Teachers" campaign, which celebrates remarkable current and retired teachers who make an impact on the lives of their students and communities. MLB, Target Corp. and PEOPLE today announced all 30 winners. The other Marlins' finalists were Claudia Perez and Keri Porter.
David Voytek, from Lake Worth, is a media specialist for North Grade Elementary School, a school for disadvantaged children. His interest in reading took him from the third-grade chair to becoming a media specialist with an impact on the wider population of children throughout the entire school district. Voytek organizes an annual trip to Washington, as well as fundraising activities like car washes, a garden club and painting hall murals throughout the school. He has produced award-winning student videos, telecast district-wide, that have earned thousands of dollars to benefit the school.
Voytek will join one winner representing each of the 30 MLB Clubs to be included in All-Star Week activities and recognized during the pregame ceremony of the 2014 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 15. The pregame ceremonies will begin at 7:30 p.m. on FOX from Target Field in Minneapolis.
Fans nationwide cast their votes at AllStarTeachers.com to select 30 winners from a pool of 90 finalists. Additionally, Eric Stonestreet, a Dodgers fan who plays a teacher on Modern Family; Matthew Morrison, a Mets fan who plays a teacher on FOX's Glee; and AJ Calloway of Extra TV, a Yankees fan whose mom is a retired principal and sister is a current principal, served alongside New York Yankees Carlos Beltran and Los Angeles Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez as "All-Star Teachers" Ambassadors to support the program.
Target presents "PEOPLE All-Star Teachers" is just one part of Target, MLB and PEOPLE's effort to celebrate teachers and raise awareness about the importance of education this baseball season. In conjunction with this MLB campaign, the Marlins launched their Fishing for Teachers program, which provides Marlins employees a distinct way to recognize their most impactful teachers. Throughout the 2014 season, teachers have been honored on the field at Marlins Park in a ceremony and presented with an engraved bat prior to Tuesday night games. The program will continue for the remainder of the season.
