• Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney will go on paternity leave Wednesday, and return to Chicago to be with his wife, Lindsay, for the birth of their third child. The Cubs will call up infielder Arismendy Alcantara from Triple-A Iowa for the remaining two games against the Reds Wednesday and Thursday. Alcantara, 22, was batting .308 with 10 home runs, 24 doubles, 11 triples and 21 stolen bases in 88 games at Iowa.
• Lefty Chris Rusin, who threw a no-hitter this year for Triple-A Iowa, was considered for the Cubs' rotation, but he will stay in the bullpen for now. Rusin pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Carlos Villanueva on Saturday against the Nationals. Jeff Samardzija was slated to start before he was traded to the Athletics.
"It wasn't easy what we asked him to do, quite frankly," manager Rick Renteria said of Rusin. "He had thrown previously, and we had him come in and pick up in the middle of an inning. He [grinded] it out and ate up some innings. He just needs to continue to pitch effectively."
