Bombers bits

• Betances is not expected to be available to pitch until Thursday against the Twins, as Girardi indicated that he would like to give the reliever two full days off. Betances pitched in three of the Yankees' last four games entering Tuesday, firing 64 pitches over those outings.

Brian McCann was not in Tuesday's lineup, getting a day off after Monday's 12-inning loss to the Rays, and Girardi said that he was not concerned by McCann's tough self-evaluation. McCann commented after Monday's game that his first 81 games as a Yankee have been "horrible."

"He'll figure it out," Girardi said of McCann, who is batting .221 with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 74 games. "He'll work and he'll figure it out and get things going. This is a guy that's got a very good track record, and when you're going through it, it's no fun. He'll get through this."

• The Yankees cancelled batting practice on Tuesday and had a late player report time. Girardi said that it was because of Monday's late game, as well as a lengthy Sunday night contest against the Red Sox.

• On this date in 2004, Derek Jeter made his famous catch diving into the stands behind third base at Yankee Stadium, taking away a 12th-inning popup from the Red Sox's Trot Nixon. The Yankees won the game, 5-4, in 13 innings on John Flaherty's RBI single.
