Beinfest set to interview for Padres' GM opening

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Padres will interview their first candidate for their general manager opening on Friday, a baseball source told MLB.com.

Larry Beinfest, former general manager and president of baseball operations for the Marlins, will be in San Diego to interview with the Friars.

The Padres have not commented on Beinfest's interview.

On Sunday, the team dismissed general manager Josh Byrnes.

As for Beinfest, 50, he has an extensive resume with three organizations -- the Mariners (1991-99), the Expos (2000-01) and the Marlins ('02-13).

Beinfest was dismissed last September by Marlins owner Jeffery Loria with two years still remaining on his contract as the team restructured its front office.

Beinfest has a strong reputation throughout the industry and a very good understanding of how to run a lower-payroll franchise, having been the architect of the 2003 Marlins team that won the World Series championship.

Beinfest has worked in player development and scouting, been a Minor League director and has worked in baseball operations.

The Padres are past the process of identifying candidates, a list that will include Mike Hazen (Red Sox), Billy Eppler (Yankees), Thad Levine (Rangers), David Forst (A's), Mike Girsch (Cardinals) and Jason McLeod (Cubs).

"The process is well underway and we feel comfortable with it," said Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler.

The team will also interview assistant general manager A.J. Hinch and senior vice president of baseball operations Omar Minaya. Hinch, Minaya and assistant general manager Fred Uhlman Jr. will share the general manager's duties in the interim, with Hinch presiding over the big league roster and daily transactions and dealings with manager Bud Black.

"Each [candidate] brings different strengths and perspectives," said Padres team president and CEO Mike Dee. "… I am energized by the process."
