SAN DIEGO -- Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon wasted no time using his replay challenge in Wednesday's game with the Padres, but his effort went for naught as Endy Chavez was ruled out on a stolen-base attempt in the top of the first inning.

McClendon thought Chavez might have avoided the tag of shortstop Everth Cabrera on the throw from catcher Rene Rivera, but after conferring with replay umpires in New York, crew chief Dale Scott ruled that the call stands.

Chavez, who had singled to lead off the game, was attempting his first stolen base of the season.

The umpires also reviewed a close play on a groundout by Dustin Ackley leading off the ninth. That out call also went unchanged, as the umpires confirmed that Cabrera's throw beat Ackley to first base.
