Mariners sign Colome to Minors deal

|
The Mariners signed right-hander Jesus Colome to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Wednesday, the club announced in a news release.

Colome appeared in 21 games with the Nationals and Brewers in 2009, giving up 18 runs in 21 1/3 innings (a 7.59 ERA) and posting a 2.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 32-year-old also appeared in 13 Minor League games for both clubs' Triple-A affiliates and went 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA.

Colome missed 15 games in late August with a forearm injury and was then released by Milwaukee on Sept. 6.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Athletics in 1996, Colome is 19-26 with a 4.66 ERA in 329 relief appearances during his nine-year big league career, with his first six seasons coming with the Rays.

While making 61 appearances each season in 2007 and '08, the Dominican Republic native compiled a 4.07 ERA and a 1.48 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
