Cash invited to Astros camp

HOUSTON -- Kevin Cash, a journeyman catcher who appeared in 10 games for the New York Yankees last season, signed a Minor League contract Friday with an invitation to Astros Spring Training.

Cash hit .231 with three RBIs in 26 at-bats for the Yankees last year, but spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, where he hit .221 with two home runs and nine RBIs. He has two full seasons on a Major League roster, serving as backup catcher in Toronto (2004) and Boston (2008).

In 197 Major League games with Toronto (2002-04), Tampa Bay (2005), Boston (2007-08) and New York (2009), Cash owns a career .186 (98-for-527) batting average with 10 homers and 53 RBIs.

The Astros have now invited 17 non-roster players to Spring Training. Including a full 40-man roster, Houston will have 57 players in Major League camp.

Meanwhile, Astros area scout Rusty Pendergrass was named the 2010 Red Murff Scout of the Year on Saturday by the Texas High School Coaches Association. The award was given at the association's annual banquet in Waco, Texas.

Pendergrass has signed six Major League players since 2001, including two 2009 All-Stars: Houston's Hunter Pence and Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist.

The award is named after longtime scout Red Murff, who signed Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and was instrumental in the formation of the Texas High School Coaches Association.
