Cards expected to activate Adams on Friday

ST. LOUIS -- If all goes well between now and then, the Cardinals anticipate activating first baseman Matt Adams from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, his first date of eligibility.

Adams went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the designated hitter for Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. Manager Mike Matheny said that the Redbirds will use Adams in the field for a full game on Thursday. Adams began his Minor League rehab assignment on Monday and has yet to feel any issues related to the left calf strain that sidelined him late last month.

"We want to see the timing right, but it's more the physical, that he feels good," Matheny said. "He's running and not having any relapses."

Upon Adams' return, the Cardinals are expected to option one of their two young outfielders, either Randal Grichuk or Oscar Taveras.
