Seven Minor Leaguers named to All-Star squads

SAN DIEGO -- Seven Padres Minor Leaguers were named to their league's respective All-Star squads Wednesday, including two selections from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

The Lake Elsinore Storm, which competes at the Class A Advanced level, had four players announced to the 23-man California League All-Star Team. They will compete against the Carolina League on June 17, in Wilmington, Del.

Headlining the selections is outfielder Hunter Renfroe, a first-round pick out of Mississippi State in 2013, who currently leads the California League in home runs (15) and total bases (133). He will start in the All-Star game.

"He's been terrific, offensively," said assistant GM of player personnel Chad MacDonald. "And he's doing what we thought he would in right field -- good defender, plus throw."

Infielder Diego Goris, the California League batting average leader (.341), was selected as a reserve. He's joined on the squad by pitchers Joe Ross -- brother of current San Diego starter Tyson Ross -- and Trevor Gott, a sixth-round draft selection in 2013.

The Fort Wayne Tincaps had three players named to the Eastern League All-Star team in the Midwest League (A).

Mallex Smith, the only Fort Wayne position player to make the team, was named a starting outfielder for the Eastern All-Stars. Pitchers Nick Mutz and Tayron Guerrero also made the squad.

The Midwest League All-Star game will take place in Comstock Park, Mich., on June 17.
