NCAA roundup: TCU wins in 22 innings

Horned Frogs top Sam Houston State in the second-longest NCAA Tournament game

NCAA roundup: TCU wins in 22 innings

With the second day of NCAA Tournament play in the books, the scene is staring to take shape as several teams were eliminated from play in the double-elimination Regionals on Saturday, including No. 2 Florida and No. 5 Florida State.

Saturday's action was highlighted by TCU's 22-inning, 3-2 victory over Sam Houston State in the Fort Worth Regional. The game was the second-longest game in NCAA Tournament history, at six hours and 55 minutes. The record is Texas' 3-2, 25-inning win over Boston College on May 30, 2009. Saturday's game also tied for the third-longest overall contest in Division I history.

While the focus of Regionals is on advancing in the NCAA Tournament, the weekend is also the last chance for scouts to evaluate players before the 2014 First-Year Player Draft begins on Thursday.

LSU junior right-hander Aaron Nola, ranked No. 6 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 200 Draft Prospects list, went 7 1/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit while striking out seven to earn the win in the Tigers' 5-1 win over Houston.

Another righty with the potential to be selected in the first round of the Draft is Florida State junior Luke Weaver, who ranks No. 32 on the Top 200 list. Weaver gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out four, and his offense nearly let him off the hook with a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, but he was handed the loss as Alabama prevailed, 6-5, to eliminate FSU.

Louisville closer Nick Burdi, who ranks No. 34 on the Top 200 list, came in and closed the Cardinals' 6-3 win over Kansas by recording the game's final out to eliminate the Jayhawks. The right-hander walked one batter and threw seven pitches in his one-third inning of work.

Kennesaw State's offensive onslaught in its 13-6 win over Georgia Southern was led by junior catcher Max Pentecost, the 19th-ranked Draft prospect on the Top 200. Pentecost had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two walks in the victory.

Another highly ranked backstop is Kyle Schwarber, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Indiana's 4-2 win over Stanford. Schwarber is ranked No. 16 on the Top 200 and could potentially play outfield at the next level. First baseman Sam Travis, No. 63 on the Top 200, went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Hoosiers. Stanford's Alex Blandino, No. 52 on the Top 200, went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

UC Irvine's Taylor Sparks, No. 56 on the Top 200, went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and scored three runs in the Anteaters' 14-2 win over Oregon State. OSU's Michael Conforto, No. 17 on the Top 200, went 0-for-3 with a walk.
