Marlon Byrd Breaks Bat Without Hitting the Ball

Pure strength.

We've seen plenty of broken bats this season, but Marlon Byrd provided the first one that has involved no contact with a ball. In the sixth inning of Sunday's game between the Phillies and Mets, Byrd took a huge hack at a 1-0 pitch from Jon Niese. Byrd came up empty, but his bat shattered at the handle as if he had been jammed with a fastball. Pure strength.

This is a broken bat that even Bo Jackson would be proud to see.
