KANSAS CITY, MO (May 28, 2014) - The Kansas City Royals announced today that three coaches on their Major League staff will be assigned different duties, beginning with tonight's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Dale Sveum will now serve as the Royals' hitting coach, Pedro Grifol will become the club's catching instructor and Mike Jirschele will be the third base coach.
Sveum returns to the role he served in his last three seasons (2009-11) with Milwaukee, helping the Brewers reach the National League Championship Series in 2011. Under Sveum, the Brewers ranked in the top 3 in the N.L. in homers in each of his three seasons as hitting coach, including leading the league with 185 roundtrippers in 2011.
Jirschele had filled in for Rusty Kuntz as the team's first base coach earlier this season when Kuntz suffered a broken wrist in late April. Grifol was a minor league catcher for nine seasons, playing in the Minnesota Twins' (1991-95) and New York Mets' (1996-99) organizations.
