In anticipation of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 10, the Marlins filled up their 40-man roster on Friday, adding right-handers Jose Ceda, Jay Buente, Brett Sinkbeil and Kris Harvey, as well as outfielder Scott Cousins.
Friday was the deadline to protect players from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft by selecting their contracts. The move ensures none of those players run the risk of being picked up by another team unless they are outrighted at a later date.
Some notable exceptions who were left off the 40-man roster were outfielder John Raynor, catcher Brad Davis and left-hander Graham Taylor, who made three emergency starts for the Marlins this season. If any team picks them in the Rule 5 Draft, they must place them on the 25-man roster or return them back to their original club for $25,000, which is half the drafting price.
Ceda was acquired from the Cubs in the deal that sent former closer Kevin Gregg to Chicago last offseason, but he missed the entire 2009 season because of shoulder surgery. The 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic sports a 3.55 ERA in 76 games (29 starts) spanning three Minor League seasons.
Buente, 26, was drafted in the 14th round by the Marlins in 2006 and went a combined 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 51 relief appearances in Double-A and Triple-A this past season.
The 24-year-old Sinkbeil, a first-round pick in 2006, went 2-8 with a 6.15 ERA in 46 games (eight starts) for Triple-A New Orleans.
Harvey, a second-round pick in 2005, went 6-7 with a 4.38 ERA in 37 games for Class A Jupiter this season. The 25-year-old has also played third base and the outfield in the Minor Leagues, though not in '09.
Cousins was the Marlins' third-round pick in 2006 and batted .263 with 12 homers, 74 RBIs and 27 steals in 130 games for Double-A Jacksonville this past season. The 24-year-old has recorded a .274 batting average, .338 on-base percentage and 61 steals in four seasons in the Minors.
