With runners at first and second, Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy singled to right-center field, scoring pitcher Jacob deGrom. In an attempt to throw out Lagares, Pirates right fielder Josh Harrison's throw to third baseman Pedro Alvarez bounced away toward the Pittsburgh dugout.
Alvarez hurriedly threw home to Martin, whose foot blocked Lagares' path to the plate without having possession of the baseball.
"I went out and I challenged both ends of it," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "The decision came down that it was the blocking, so I still retained my challenge. That's why in the long run, this is going to work. The challenge, the review, this system is going to work."
In the seventh inning, Lagares was involved in another reviewed play after being called out at first base on a groundout to Alvarez. This time, Collins initiated the review and after 2 minutes and 8 seconds, the call stood.
