Sports fans score rare treat today

PHILADELPHIA -- Hopefully you took advantage of that extra hour of sleep you got on Saturday night because it's time to get those remotes ready. Today is going to be every sports fan's dream.

For only the second time, all four major sports leagues in North America will play a non-exhibition game on the same day. In fact, in the span of 10 hours, the four leagues will see a combined 24 contests played out from coast to coast.

There will be a tipoff, kickoff and puck dropped in 10 places at 1 p.m. ET. At 8:20 p.m. a first pitch of Game 4 of the World Series is scheduled to be thrown in Philadelphia. The National Hockey League's Avalanche-Canucks matchup at 10 p.m. will conclude the slate of games, half of which will be played out on the gridiron.

The last and only other time such a four-sport treat was offered was on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, the same day on which the Yankees and D-backs faced each other in an epic Game 7. The Sept. 11 attacks less than two months earlier had postponed the start of baseball's World Series and, as a result, pushed its conclusion late enough for such an oddity in the sports schedule to occur. That was also the only other year that baseball was played in November.

A pair of the two dozen events will actually take place across the street from each other here in Philadelphia and, ironically enough, it will pit the same two cities against each other. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants kick off at Lincoln Financial Field at 1 p.m. The Eagles' home stadium sits across from Citizens Bank Park, which will, of course, be filled to capacity later tonight for Game 4 of the World Series.

In fact, the two New York-Philadelphia matchups mark a first. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, never before will a World Series game and National Football League game between the same two cities be played in the same city on the same day.
