Draft prospect Fedde needs Tommy John surgery

The theme song for the 2014 Draft class might be Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust."

Erick Fedde became the latest top pitching prospect to get shut down for the year, and the second to require Tommy John surgery. The UNLV ace was ranked No. 17 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Draft prospects list, though he was bumped down to No. 28 following this news.

Fedde was 8-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts for UNLV, but he skipped his start over the weekend of May 3. He wasn't able to start at San Diego State this past weekend, and an MRI revealed a torn right UCL.

News of Fedde's impending surgery comes not long after East Carolina ace Jeff Hoffman needed elbow reconstruction as well. Hoffman was a contender to be the top pick in the Draft at one point, and both he and Fedde would have likely been top-of-the-first-round talents.

They're not the only pitchers to have injury issues this spring on the Draft landscape. Georgia high school pitcher Dylan Cease has missed most of the year with an elbow issue as well, though he still hopes to avoid surgery. Rice right-hander Zech Lemond hasn't pitched since early April.

TCU ace Brandon Finnegan came out of his start on April 25, then missed his following start. He did return to the mound this past Friday.
