CC named AL's best August pitcher

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for August.

In six starts last month, Sabathia posted a perfect 5-0 record with a 2.64 ERA while leading the AL with 44 1/3 innings and a Major League-best 49 strikeouts as the Yankees built a commanding lead over the Red Sox in the AL East.

It's the fourth monthly honor of Sabathia's career and his second as a member of the AL. Most recently, Sabathia was named National League Pitcher of the Month in August 2008. As a member of the Brewers, he was also 5-0 during that month.

The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner -- as a member of the Indians -- is 20-2 with a Major League-best 2.21 ERA over the past five Augusts and is the only pitcher in the Majors with more than one five-win August over that stretch (5-0 in 2005, '08 and '09).

On the season, Sabathia is 16-7 with a 3.48 ERA and 167 strikeouts.
