ANAHEIM -- The Angels signed veteran relief pitcher Brandon Lyon to a Minor League contract with a Spring Training invitation on Monday, giving them additional bullpen depth three days before pitchers and catchers report to Tempe, Ariz.

Lyon has compiled a 4.16 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 2.11 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 79 saves in 572 appearances over 12 seasons in the big leagues.

Last year, the 34-year-old right-hander appeared in 37 games with the Mets, posting a 4.98 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. He then signed with the Red Sox on July 19, made four appearances out of their Triple-A bullpen and opted out of his contract on Aug. 1, going unsigned for the last two months of the regular season.

On the Angels, Lyon projects to start the season in Triple-A.
