On the player development side, Boston hired Joe Oliver as manager of the short-season Class A Lowell Spinners. Oliver spent 13 seasons as a big league catcher, finishing his career with the Red Sox in 2001, and had been coaching varsity baseball at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Fla.
The Red Sox also promoted Paul Buchheit to head Minor League medical coordinator after two years as the athletic training coordinator and six years working with different Boston affiliates. Mauricio Elizondo was promoted to Latin American medical coordinator and will continue to serve as the athletic trainer for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox.
Meanwhile, the organization made changes to its scouting staff. Jaymie Bane, the son of special assistant to player personnel Eddie Bane, was made a Major League scout after serving as a professional scout since 2007. Former big league pitcher Les Walrond was hired as a pro scout.
On the amateur side, Tim Collinsworth was hired as an area scout for North Texas and North Louisiana after six years as an area scout for the Brewers. For international scouting, Javier Hernandez was promoted to the assistant director of the team's Dominican Academy, Manuel Padron was hired as a scout in Venezuela and will serve as the coordinator of Venezuelan scouting, and Rene Saggiadi was hired as a scout assigned to Europe.
Boston also made several changes to its medical staff, including the promotion of Dan Dyrek to director, sports medicine service. Dr. Brian Busconi, an orthopedic surgeon, was named the head Minor League physician after spending more than two decades working with Red Sox Minor Leaguers. Ray Mattfeld, a certified orthopedic clinical specialist and certified athletic trainer, was hired away from private practice to be a Major League physical therapist.
In other moves, Steve Sanders was promoted to coordinator, amateur and international scouting; Mike Regan was promoted to coordinator, baseball operations; Shawn O'Rourke was promoted to coordinator, baseball systems development; and Harrison Slutsky was hired as assistant, advance scouting.
