MIAMI -- The Marlins agreed to terms Tuesday on a two-year contract with infielder Jeff Baker, who bolsters the club's depth and offers a potential platoon option at first base.

MLB.com has confirmed the deal is worth $3.7 million, plus incentives. Baker, 32, will earn $1.6 million this year and $2.1 million in 2015. The finalization of the contract is pending the completion of a physical exam.

An established utility player, Baker spent last year with the Rangers, where his slash line was .279/.360/.545. A right-handed hitter, Baker had 11 home runs and 21 RBIs in 75 games in his lone season in Texas.

The veteran broke in with the Rockies in 2005, and Baker has also played for the Cubs, Tigers and Braves. He is a career .267 hitter with 48 homers and 199 RBIs.

The two-year commitment guarantees Baker a roster spot, and he offers depth at a number of positions.

The Marlins have stated they will give first baseman Garrett Jones the opportunity to play every day. But if Jones scuffles against lefties, Baker is an option at first for manager Mike Redmond. Baker also has played second and third base, as well as the corner outfield spots.

Miami signed free agent Casey McGehee to play regularly at third base. Baker offers experience at the hot corner. And he also could give free-agent pickup Rafael Furcal a breather at second base.

As a pinch-hitter last year with the Rangers, Baker was 6-for-21 (.286) with two doubles.
