KANSAS CITY, MO (November 7, 2013) - The Kansas City Royals have been named co-American League Defensive Team of the Year by Wilson Sporting Goods, while outfielder Lorenzo Cain was selected as the Royals' representative for the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Kansas City shares the league's defensive team of the year award with the Baltimore Orioles, which was announced earlier this evening as part of a special on MLB Network.
Founded in 2012, the Wilson Defensive Player and Team of the Year Award winners are determined by using a formula that balances scouting information, sabermetric analysis and basic fielding statistics. One player from each Major League club was recognized as its top defensive player.
The Royals boasted their best fielding percentage (.986) in team history, committing just 85 errors in 5,950 total chances. KC's outfielders recorded 40 assists, which ranked second in the American League to Minnesota's 44. A team record three Royals were honored with Gold Gloves, outfielder Alex Gordon, first baseman Eric Hosmer and catcher Salvador Perez. Cain finished third among American League outfielders with a .923 zone rating and set a career high with seven assists.
