Giants left-hander Jonathan Sanchez was a near lock to receive National League Player of the Week honors after tossing 2009's first no-hitter on Friday. Which means that Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick had a heck of a week at the plate to be named Co-Player of the Week.
Sanchez and Ludwick were named co-winners of the Bank of America award on Monday for the week of July 6-12.
Sanchez struck out 11 and allowed just one baserunner -- on an eight-inning error by third baseman Juan Uribe -- in his no-hitter against the Padres on Friday. The start was the southpaw's first since a brief demotion to the bullpen after going 0-4 with a 7.45 ERA in four June starts. The no-hitter the first for the Giants in nearly 33 years.
Ludwick batted .481 (13-for-27) with four doubles, four homers and 15 RBIs in seven games for the Cardinals last week. He twice homered and drove in three runs in wins over the Brewers, while twice driving in four runs in wins over the Cubs. He finished the first half by going 5-for-9 with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs in the Cardinals' doubleheader split with the Cubs on Sunday.
