D-backs, Cabrera reach terms

|
NEW YORK -- The D-backs have agreed to terms with free agent pitcher Daniel Cabrera on a Minor League contract, the right-hander's agent, Mike Powers, said Monday.

Cabrera threw for D-backs scouts Saturday in the Dominican Republic. Powers had planned to have Cabrera throw for other teams' scouts Monday, but Arizona scout Muzzy Jackson set up Saturday's throwing session in the Dominican.

"I've got to give Muzzy a lot of credit," Powers said. "This is a good opportunity for Daniel. The goal is to get him up to 90-100 pitches and then see where things stand."

Cabrera will report to the team's Triple-A team in Reno, Nev., later this week.

The 28-year-old struggled with the Nationals this year, going 0-5 with a 5.85 ERA in nine games, eight of which were starts. The Nats designated him for assignment May 27.

Powers said Cabrera had some discomfort in his elbow and saw Dr. James Andrews, who put him on a strengthening program that had him throwing 94-95 mph on Saturday.
