PHILADELPHIA -- Pedro Martinez takes his next step toward joining the Phillies rotation Sunday, when he makes a rehab start for Class A Clearwater at Bright House Field.
Martinez, whom the Phillies signed to a prorated $2 million contract July 15, threw twice this week in Clearwater, Fla. He came out of both sessions well.
Martinez, 37, is expected to need three rehab starts before he could join the Phillies. If he remains on schedule, he would make his second rehab start July 31 and his third Aug. 5. It is possible he could join the Phillies rotation sometime after that.
Martinez will pitch against the St. Lucie Mets, the New York Mets affiliate. Martinez pitched for the Mets from 2005-08.
