Major League Baseball lived up to the "Going Beyond" theme of its All-Star Week activities by generating more than $7 million of donations to charitable organizations through programs leading up to and during the 80th Midsummer Classic. The lion's share of the donations generated by the most ambitious community initiatives in All-Star Game history came on Gatorade All-Star Workout Day in St. Louis' Busch Stadium. MLB Charities and Cardinals Care will be distributing nearly $5 million to various local and national charities. Details of the charitable results of All-Star Week were included in a press release by MLB.
The breakdown of the rest of the charity box score: $1 million to Stand Up To Cancer by MLB, via the MLB All-Star Charity Concert, featuring Sheryl Crow and Elvis Costello. $665,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, by MLB and State Farm Insurance, via the State Farm Home Run Derby. $180,000 toward renovation of All-Star Field at the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club in St. Louis, by Anheuser-Busch. $100,000 to Feeding America, a St. Louis food bank, by Bank of America, via $5,000 pledged for every hit in the All-Star Game plus a match for all July 13 donations made at the Feeding America website. $90,000 distributed equally among the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, via the All-Star Charity 5K and Fun Run, an inaugural event that attracted 8,000 participants. $50,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and $25,000 to MLB's RBI program, via the Holiday Inn Hit Tracker. $50,000 to Stand Up To Cancer by MasterCard, via the "Hit It Here" signage program. $50,000 to Teach for America by MasterCard, via the MLB All-Star FanFest.
