Berkman departs with strained calf

LOS ANGELES -- Astros first baseman Lance Berkman left Thursday's 3-0 win over the Dodgers in the eighth inning with a mild left calf strain. He is listed as day-to-day.

Berkman, who went 0-for-3 with a walk, was removed from the game after going hard down the line while trying to beat out a ground ball to first base in the top of the eighth. Berkman was hitting .342 in July prior to going hitless against the Dodgers.

"It's been bothering me for a while, to be honest with you," Berkman said. "It's been manageable, but that's as hard as I've run in a while. It doesn't feel great, but hopefully in the morning it will feel better."

Darin Erstad replaced Berkman at first base and made a couple of terrific defensive plays, turning a 3-6-3 double play and making a sliding catch down the line.

Thursday's game marked the 10-year anniversary of Berkman's first game in the Major Leagues. He leads the Astros in homers (18) and RBIs (55).
