Fernandez shares second NL weekly honor

Rookie sensation Jose Fernandez earned yet another honor on Monday, as the Marlins right-hander was named Co-National League Player of the Week.

Fernandez went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA last week to share the honor with Cubs righty Jeff Samardzija, who went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA.

It is Fernandez's second weekly honor of the season, with the other having come in late July.

The 21-year-old Fernandez opened the week by holding the Dodgers to two runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings, striking out eight. He was even better on Saturday against Colorado, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out eight and allowing only four Rockies to reach base.

Those two outings improved Fernandez to 10-5 with a 2.30 ERA in 25 starts. Fernandez stands alongside Hideo Nomo and Jaime Garcia as only the third Major Leaguer in the last 25 years to post double-digit wins with an ERA under 2.50 in the first 25 starts of a rookie season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Fernandez's 2.30 ERA is the third lowest in the Majors behind fellow NL All-Stars Clayton Kershaw (1.72) and Matt Harvey (2.27).
