• Ian Desmond, who came out of Wednesday's game against the Cubs in the fifth inning with tightness in his back, was not in the lineup for Thursday's series finale.
"His back is still a little stiff," Johnson said. "He's a tough cookie. He didn't want to come out of the game, but he was hurting … it's not that much better this morning. He's an iron-man. He's been an iron-man all year. I'm sure we'll miss him in the lineup, but we didn't want to make it worse."
• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, with his seventh-inning blast in Wednesday's win over the Cubs, Scott Hairston became the first player in the Majors since Tony Batista on Sept. 20, 2001, to hit a pinch-hit, go-ahead home run against a team he played for earlier in the same season.
