Stand Up To Cancer, an organization that enables research into that disease, will be a first-time recipient of donations in the "Hit It Here" in-stadium promotion during All-Star Week at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
This latest promotion is another facet of Major League Baseball's commitment to dedicating the 2009 All-Star Summer to raising funds and increasing awareness of charitable initiatives that run the gamut of important causes, as well as celebrating the importance of community service. The theme of "Going Beyond" is the most extensive such campaign in Major League Baseball All-Star history.
The first home run in either the July 13 Derby or the July 14 All-Star Game itself to directly strike one of the three pre-designated MasterCard "Hit It Here" signs at Busch (one on the left-field light post, one in left-center field and one in right field on the upper deck façade) will result in a $1 million donation by MasterCard to Stand Up To Cancer.
If one of the signs is hit during both events, MasterCard will increase that donation to $2 million.
In previous years, the "Hit It Here' promotion rewarded a lucky fan in attendance, but the promotion has been tweaked this year to become part of the ever-increasing humanitarian emphasis of the 80th annual All-Star Game.
The 2009 State Farm Home Run Derby, part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day, will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Monday.
The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and Sportsnet HD and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pregame ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m. ET. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage.
