Teixeira won't be in Home Run Derby

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira's 20 home runs in a Yankees uniform may have him tied for second in the American League, but the switch-hitting slugger won't be bringing his stroke to the State Farm Home Run Derby.

Teixeira said after the Yankees' 10-8 win over the Jays on Sunday that he would not accept an invitation to perform in the hitting exhibition at St. Louis' Busch Stadium on July 13, saying that his one experience before the 2005 Midsummer Classic was more than enough.

"I'm just not a Home Run Derby guy," Teixeira said. "It doesn't fit well for me. If I go out there and just hit two or three home runs, I'd rather let someone else go out and do it."

Teixeira is an AL All-Star for the second time and his first as a Yankee. In 2005, he represented the Rangers and hit only two home runs, being eliminated in the first round at Detroit's Comerica Park. Bobby Abreu won, hitting a record 24 home runs in Round 1 and finishing with 41 total.

"I was terrible and embarrassed myself, so I'm not going to do that again," Teixeira said.

Numerous players -- Alex Rodriguez included -- have declined to take part in the Derby in years past, saying that the competition affects their stroke. Teixeira hit .315 with 18 homers and 71 RBIs after the All-Star break in 2005, so he didn't think his swing was affected.

"But I could see where some guys might say it does," Teixeira said. "When you take [batting practice] on a normal day, you go the other way and try to hit some line drives here and there. It's not a normal batting-practice session."

Teixeira said that he plans to be on the field and watch whoever does decide to compete, taking in the deep drives along with the rest of the baseball world.

"I'll be a big fan during the Home Run Derby this year," Teixeira said.
