CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced Short-Season A Mahoning Valley 1B NELLIE RODRIGUEZ has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week for July 15-22.
Rodriguez, 19, ranked 6th in the New York-Penn League in batting throughout the week, hitting .464 (13-28) with 9 RBI, while posting a 1.393 OPS (.500 OBP/.893 SLG). He led the New York-Penn League in extra base hits, collecting 3 home runs and 3 doubles, while also scoring a league-high 9 runs. He recorded 5 multi-hit performances during the week, including a 4-5 effort with 2 HR and 5 RBI on July 17 at Brooklyn. After beginning the season at Lake County, Rodriguez is batting .331 (42-127) with 7 2B, 5HR & 22 RBI in 34 games for the Scrappers. He is currently 2nd in the NYPL in hits, tied for 1st in total bases (64), 5th in RBI and 7th in batting average.
The 6-2”, 250-pound first baseman was originally drafted by the Indians in 15th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of George Washington High School in New York City, the same high school that produced Manny Ramirez.
