Beachy preparing to begin throwing program

MILWAUKEE -- Brandon Beachy is close to getting back on a throwing program. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Beachy would throw a bullpen session once the team's road trip ends Wednesday in Kansas City.

"I don't know exactly which day, but he'll throw a bullpen," Gonzalez said. "Probably just a light bullpen."

Beachy felt tenderness in his pitching elbow while making his fifth Minor League rehab start on June 13. He is coming back from Tommy John surgery on June 21, 2012. He had been scheduled to start for the Braves this week against the Mets, but he was scratched after suffering the setback.

Gonzalez said having this type of setback was normal, and the team would "play it safe" in monitoring the right-hander's return.

"We're not alarmed," Gonzalez said.

Beachy will throw a couple of bullpen sessions before returning to the Minors for more rehab starts, Gonzalez said.

"Right now, there's no plan other than to throw a bullpen," Gonzalez said.
