Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending June 2nd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Brown earned his second consecutive Player of the Week honor after leading the Major Leagues with seven home runs, 13 RBI, 35 total bases and a 1.296 slugging percentage. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp (April 9th and April 16th) and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (July 9th and July 16th) both won consecutive N.L. Player of the Week awards last season. The 25-year-old Brown also ranked among N.L. leaders with eight runs scored (T-1st), 12 hits (3rd), a .444 (12-for-27) batting average (5th) and a .483 on-base percentage (7th) while adding a triple and a pair of stolen bases.
Brown hit homers in three consecutive games to start the week, clubbing solo shots in a 9-3 loss at Boston on Monday and a 3-1 win over the Sox on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the young slugger hit two blasts, helping the Phillies edge the Red Sox in the first game of their two-game series at Citizens Bank Park. On Friday, Brown tied a career-best with four RBI and posted his second multi-homer game of the week in a losing effort as the Phillies dropped an 8-5 decision to the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. In Sunday's series finale, the fourth-year veteran tied a career high with three hits and notched another four-RBI game, leading the way to a 7-5 victory. Brown put the Phillies up early, hitting his league-leading 16th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning. The Florida native added an RBI triple in the second inning to collect his 40th RBI of the season and stake Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee an early 7-0 lead. This marks the second career weekly award for Brown following last week's honors. He becomes the first Phillies player in Club history to earn the award in consecutive weeks and the first to win twice in the same season since Chase Utley accomplished the feat (May 1-7, 2006 and July 24-30, 2006).
Other noteworthy performances last week included Brown's Phillies teammate Cliff Lee (2-0, 2.30 ERA, 19 SO, 15.2 IP); Miami's Chris Coghlan (.452, HR, 8 RBI, 14 H, 3 2B, .710 SLG); Colorado's Michael Cuddyer (.462, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 12 H, .731 SLG, .500 OBP); Atlanta's Freddie Freeman (.433, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 13 H, .733 SLG); Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt (.476, HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 10 H, .542 OBP); Milwaukee's Jonathan Lucroy (.429, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 12 H, .893 SLG); Cincinnati's Mike Leake (1-0, 0.68 ERA, 12 SO, 13.1 IP); Edward Mujica (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SV, 3 SO, 3.0 IP) and Adam Wainwright (2-0, 2.12 ERA, CG, SHO, 15 SO, 17.0 IP) of the St. Louis Cardinals; Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 7 SO, 9.0 IP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Chicago's Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 1.76 ERA, CG, SHO, 19 SO, 15.1 IP).
