A's statement regarding the passing of Dr. Lewis Yocum

Dr. Lewis Yocum, a consulting orthopedist for the Oakland Athletics since 1995 and one of the nation's most respected sports physicians, passed away due to liver cancer on Saturday night. He was 65.

The A's issued the following statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Yocum's passing this past weekend.   He has been both a leader and pioneer in the field of sports medicine and has had a profound influence on our sport. He has been a great friend and educator for athletic trainers everywhere, and we felt extremely thankful that the Oakland A's had a formal relationship with him during the past 18 years. We will miss him greatly, both as a friend and a professional, and extend our deepest condolences to his wife Beth and their family."

Yocum, who served as the Los Angeles Angels' team orthopedist for the past 36 years, also worked as an associate at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
