The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa on the 15-day disabled list with a muscular strain of his right forearm. Right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett, who was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles earlier today, has been added to the active roster.
Burnett, 25, will wear uniform number 50 and is available for tonight's game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Burnett this season is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER/12.0 IP) in nine minor league relief appearances between Triple-A Buffalo and Triple-A Norfolk. He made two relief appearances for Baltimore this month, totaling 1.1 innings, before he was designated for assignment by the Orioles, May 23. He made a career-high 67 relief appearances for the Minnesota Twins in 2012, going 4-4 with 10 holds and a 3.52 ERA (28 ER/71.2 IP).
Fujikawa, 32, is 1-1 with two saves and a 5.25 ERA (7 ER/12.0 IP) in 12 relief appearances for Chicago. He has held opponents scoreless in nine of 12 outings, walking two and striking out 14, while holding the opposition to a .239 batting average (11-for-46). Fujikawa signed a two-year deal with a vesting/club option for a third season during this past offseason.
