Interleague Play's Prime Rivals Week to Begin on Memorial Day

|

Many geographic Interleague rivalries and past World Series match-ups will be on display on Memorial Day, when the "prime rivals" segment of Interleague Play will begin. For the first time, the Interleague series that feature prime rivals will include back-to-back two-game series spanning both cities/venues.

Interleague Play's prime rivals will begin to play on Monday, and the host Clubs in the same match-ups will shift on Wednesday. All Clubs are playing 20 Interleague games throughout the regular season. The 20 Interleague games will be played in eight series - four at home and four on the road.

Geographic rivalries this week will include series such as Angels-Dodgers (Angels lead all-time series 54-38), Giants-Athletics (Athletics lead 47-45), Twins-Brewers (Twins lead 48-40), Indians-Reds (Indians lead 42-39), Orioles-Nationals (Orioles lead 29-28, including Montreal Expos era), Yankees-Mets (Yankees lead 54-36), Cubs-White Sox (White Sox lead 49-41), Cardinals-Royals (Cardinals lead 42-30) and Marlins-Rays (Marlins lead 43-42). Resuming Interleague rivalries are the Braves-Blue Jays (series tied 15-15), marking a renewal of the 1992 World Series, along with Phillies-Red Sox (1915; Red Sox lead 29-20) and Pirates-Tigers (1909; Tigers lead 18-15). Other installments of past World Series are Yankees-Mets (2000), Giants-A's (1989), Cardinals-Royals (1985) and Cubs-White Sox (1906).

In 2012, American League Clubs posted a 142-110 (.563) record in Interleague Play, marking the ninth straight year that the A.L. won the season-series and the 12th time in 16 years. Entering play on Sunday, the A.L. leads the 2013 season-series 31-29 (.517) and holds an all-time lead of 2,112-1,912 (.525) in Interleague Play. The Yankees, at 174-114 (.604), hold the best record all-time in Interleague Play, while the Cardinals have the best mark among National League Clubs at 125-110 (.532).
