Bombers bits

• Travis Hafner could be considered to start as a designated hitter against left-handed pitching, according to manager Joe Girardi, but for the moment Girardi plans to stick with Ben Francisco in that role.

• Brennan Boesch is expected to get a start in the outfield on Wednesday, as Girardi plans to give Vernon Wells a day off.

• Brett Gardner entered play on Tuesday having reached base in 13 consecutive games dating back to April 7, the fourth-longest stretch of his career and his longest since a 16-game stretch from July 7-27, 2011.

• On this date in 1903, the Highlanders recorded the first win in franchise history, a 7-2 victory at Washington. Harry Howell was the winning pitcher.

On this date in 2000, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams became the first teammates in Major League history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. The Yankees won, 10-7, at Toronto.
