KANSAS CITY -- Royals starting pitcher Gil Meche left Tuesday night's game against Toronto with lower back tightness. He will be reevaluated Wednesday and his condition was listed as day-to-day.
Meche was pulled in the fourth inning with two outs after the Blue Jays had scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead. He gave up five hits, including a two-run single by Vernon Wells just before leaving the game.
It was Meche's shortest and worst outing this season. In his previous four starts, he was 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA and he had pitched seven or more innings three times and went six innings in the other game.
This time, he expended 85 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings. He gave up the five earned runs on seven hits and walked five, one more than he did in his four previous outings.
Meche had lower back problems early in Spring Training but seemed to have overcome the problem well before the season began.
