"Life Begins on Opening Day"

To celebrate Opening Day, Major League Baseball Productions tapped into the MLB Film & Video Archive to assemble this montage titled “Life Begins on Opening Day.”  Featuring the greatest voices ever to grace the baseball airwaves welcoming fans back to the national pastime -- including Mel Allen, Jerry Coleman, Curt Gowdy, Milo Hamilton, Ernie Harwell, Ralph Kiner, Tony Kubek, Vin Scully and Mike Shannon among many others -- the video also highlights Presidential first pitches over the years, along with many of greatest moments that have taken place on Opening Day throughout baseball history, including:

  • Bob Feller throwing the first – and to this day, only – no-hitter on Opening Day (1940)
  • Jackie Robinson makes his debut, breaking the color barrier (1947)
  • Hank Aaron hits his 714th career home run, tying Babe Ruth (1974)
  • Frank Robinson homers in his first game as player/manager of the Cleveland Indians, also becoming the first African-American manager in MLB history (1975)
  • Fernando Valenzuela throws a shutout to begin his season of “Fernandomania” (1981)
  • Gary Carter hits a walk-off HR in his first game as a Met (1985)
  • George Bell becomes the first to hit three home runs on Opening Day (1988)
  • Dante Bichette hits a 14th inning walk-off HR for the Rockies in the first-ever game at Coors Field (1995)
  • The Mets and Cubs helping MLB open its season in Japan for the first time (2000)
