The Red Sox released first baseman Lyle Overbay on Tuesday, trimming the number of players in camp to 38.
Overbay, 36, signed a Minor League deal with the Red Sox in January with an invitation to Spring Training, during which he hit .220 with one double, two triples and seven RBIs in 19 games.
Overbay is a 12-year veteran who has played for the D-backs, Blue Jays, Brewers, Pirates and Braves.
Among the 38 players remaining in Red Sox camp, 32 are on the 40-man roster, one is on the 60-day disabled list and five are non-roster invitees.
