Mauer's rehab progressing

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins catcher Joe Mauer has now added running the bases to his list of activities that he's done during his rehab in Fort Myers, Fla. and he remains on schedule to play in some games next week, manager Ron Gardenhire said Thursday.

Mauer, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed right sacroiliac joint, is expected to play in some extended Spring Training games next week with the players who will make up the club's Gulf Coast League team.

The catcher has been able to run without any back pain this week, which has been the biggest step in his quest to get back to playing in games again. Along with his running program, Mauer has continued to take batting practice and catch bullpen sessions over the past week at the Twins' training facility in Fort Myers.

Gardenhire still did not give a target date for Mauer's return to the team, but said that things have been going according to schedule.

"Everything is going really good and he's feeling really good," Gardenhire said.
