Rather than stick the right-hander into Brandon Webb's spot in the rotation in Friday's series opener against the Giants in San Francisco, D-backs manager Bob Melvin has decided to just bump each one of his starters up a day.
With Thursday's off-day, that means that Dan Haren will pitch on regular rest Friday with Doug Davis and Max Scherzer pitching in the weekend games, also on regular rest.
Jon Garland will face the Rockies on Monday at Chase Field, and then Melvin will have another decision on his hands when Tuesday rolls around.
None of the four can pitch in that game without going on short rest, something the D-backs have shied away from in recent years, and Webb is not eligible to come off the disabled list until April 22. It's not even known whether he will be able to do so or if he will need more time.
"Early in the season here, we're not overtaxing guys," Melvin said. "I just think early in the season, we're probably better off just moving everybody forward and going with them."
