The game will mark the second appearance of the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at a home of the Yankees. Nicknamed the Engineers at the time, Lehigh was defeated by NYU, 13-0, at the original Yankee Stadium on November 6, 1937, with a crowd of 11,000 on hand.
The Lafayette Leopards played five times at the House that Ruth Built, compiling a 2-3 record. Lafayette’s first visit to the original Stadium was on October 25, 1924, when they defeated Washington & Jefferson, 20-6, in front of 15,000 fans. The Leopards also played NYU four times (1933-34, ’36-37) at the original Stadium, dropping the first three contests and winning the final meeting, 13-0, on October 23, 1937.
With a rivalry that dates back to 1884, the Lehigh and Lafayette college football teams have played at least once every season with just one exception (1896). Their 2012 matchup marks the 116th consecutive year that the schools have met on the gridiron, marking the longest current streak between any teams in all of college football.
Lafayette will be the host team for the 2014 game at Yankee Stadium, which marks the first neutral-site Lafayette-Lehigh meeting since November 25, 1891, when Lehigh triumphed, 16-2, at West Side Park in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Heading into today’s game, Lafayette holds a 76-66-5 edge in the all-time series.
The current Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009, has hosted four college football games to date, most recently the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on December 30, 2011, in which Rutgers defeated Iowa State, 27-13. The 2012 New Era Pinstripe Bowl will be played on Saturday, December 29, between two yet-to-be-determined teams from the Big East and Big 12 Conferences.
Details on ticket availability for the Lafayette-Lehigh game will be announced at a later date. For up-to-date information, fans can visit www.yankees.com/football and follow @yankeesevents or @yankeespr on Twitter.
